DEBIT CARD DRAWBACKS
The major, if not the only disadvantage to using a debit
card is absence of the cardholder's ability to stop payment
on a purchase. There is, still, a billing error dispute
process, which we will cover later in this section. But, the
law does not provide the protection afforded credit card
holders with regard to the "good faith" or "60-day" stop
payment. So, if you purchase a product or service on your
debit card, you may be stuck.
One tactic you can try, yet, is to complain to the merchant
and threaten to "charge back" the purchase. Since a debit
card transaction is identical to a charge card transaction,
they won't know the difference. Most merchants won't want to
jeopardize their merchant's credit card account and will
give in to your demands and give you a refund or replacement
item. But remember, where debit cards are concerned, they're
not legally obligated to do so.
